Film Scans

I finally got some of my film scanned. I'm still not really happy with the results, but I can live with it. I need to figure out what the scanner software is trying to do that I'm missing.

The top image is from a trip to the Chicago Theological Seminary. The bottom one is a building near a local church.

Blues on the Mall for June 25th

More people/event photography.  A local radio station sponsors a weekly Blues concert during the summer.  Held outside, they usually get several thousand people.  A local restaurant has a motorcycle "corral" and there are the usual food booths set up.  The music is pretty good and they've had some big name acts in the past.  Another good place to go if you want to photograph people.

I have realized though that I'm doing more and more of this type of photography.  While I like it, I need to get back to what I consider the more artsy stuff.

Yet Another FIre

Every June there is a art fair and sale in East Grand Rapids. The local library also has a book sale at the same time, so I try to go. A friend of mine has a booth there selling extremely good photography. I also like to look at the rest of the vendors and once in a while I buy something.

This year on my way over, I noticed a big cloud of smoke rising on the south end of town. An hour and a half or so later, it was still there. I decided to be nosy and go check it out. It turned out to be the Kentwood Fire Department burning down a set of old buildings. Since I had my camera with me, I decided to stop and take some photos.

MPG Musings

Speeds on the highways are starting to creep up again. I noticed that once gas prices hit over $4 per gallon, everyone slowed down. Now that folks are getting used to it, they are going faster again. It's funny though, the ones that seemed to have gotten used to it the fastest are the ones who own the biggest vehicles. I've noticed that I seem to get my doors blown off regularly by Hummers and Tahoes.

I've managed to keep my speed down so far. Filling up yesterday, I realized by doing so, I increased my gas mileage. By keeping my speed down, I got over 30 mpg. I need to keep checking, but if I can keep it up, that means one less tank of gas every two and a half months. At over $50 a tank for gas, that's an extra $300 per year. Now all I need to do is continue to try to cut down on my driving. I still tend to take too many trips.

Rockford Summer Celebration

At the last minute, last night I decided to go up to Rockford to photograph the carnival. I had heard earlier in the day that one was in town. While I didn't get any good shots of the carnival, I did get some fireworks shots instead.

I also got hassled be a group of kids who didn't care for me taking their photo. One threatened to get his dad, who supposedly was a cop. I waited for 10 minutes or so for them to show back up, but it started to sprinkle. This older boy, almost college age, seemed to think he had some privacy rights to not have his picture taken in a public place. I laughed.

People are fun

I've never really considered myself a people person.  There have been times when all I wanted to do was to get as far away as possible and be by myself.  I find that attitude changing as I get older.  Since I've been working out of my house for the past year, I find I need to get out for coffee or something just to be around people.  I tend to miss the hustle and bustle of the office and the three cats I have for office mates, just don't cut it.

I also find that I like doing what has been called street photography.  Candid moments captured while people are being themselves.  These two images are from a weekly dance being put on by the Grand Rapids Oldtime Swing Society or GROSS.  They've been holding outdoor dances downtown for the last few weeks.  There fun to go to and a couple times they've had live bands which is cool also.  Though I have to admit that hearing a swing band do the Village Peoples YMCA is somewhat surreal.

Wandering Festival

The cool thing about Festival is the people. Sure the music, food and other stuff is great, but it's fun just to wander around with a camera and people watch.

Festival of the Arts Regional Arts Show

This was the weekend of the big regional arts show. They have music, dance and a whole lot of other stuff going on for three days in downtown Grand Rapids. Part of it is a regional arts show. I got to see my two accepted pieces hung on the wall along with all the other work.

I'm still really geeked about this and I know I'm going to be sad when I have to go pick them up.

Chicago Theological Seminary

I had an opportunity to photograph inside the Chicago Theological Seminary yesterday. I mostly used my 4x5 for the interiors, and I just started developing the film. I did get a few shots with my dSLR also. As usual when I am in Chicago, I always seem to get asked for money. This gentelman was the first one. He obliged me by posing for me and got some cash in return.

Indiana Jones

We went and saw the new Indiana Jones movie Monday. I thought it was a bit slow and while I expect a summer action movie to require a suspension of disbelief, it was a little too overboard. Plus the CGI was a little too obvious. On the good side, it was nice to see Karen Allen back in the movie. All in all, it was an ok summer movie, but my current summer fav is still Iron Man.
